I didn’t walk into cannabis as an accountant. I walked in as a budtender.
Before cannabis, I spent nine years running retail and distribution operations. I worked my way from delivery driver to store manager at an automotive paint supplier, and along the way I got hooked on how businesses actually run: how cash moves, where it leaks, and why the numbers so often don’t tell the truth. In March 2023 I took an entry-level job on the sales floor at a New Jersey multi-state operator. Not to stay at the register, but to learn the industry from the inside.
What I found was an industry that runs on cash, gets little help from banks and carries tax exposure most businesses never face, yet still reconciles its sales by hand. I kept fixing what I saw. Five promotions in under three years took me from patient advisor to Senior Accountant, where I now lead the close, reconciliations, controls and 280E work for more than ten entities in six states.
